What Eucalyptus Is:

Eucalyptus, a genus with some 500 species, is one of the tallest trees in the world. Some species—indigenous to Australia but now found in various parts of North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and India—can grow up to 300 feet tall. The trees suck up so much water that they are said to eradicate malaria-infested swamps, although that attribute is more often ascribed to the melaleuca (see "Tea Tree" ), a relative. Helping to curb malaria, however, isn't the eucalyptus's only contribution to medicine. The crushed leaves have long been used as an aromatic treatment for respiratory problems. How aromatic? Just faint and find out: Eucalyptus oil is the next best thing to smelling salts.
