What Dong quai herb Is:

In traditional Chinese medicine, only ginseng is more highly prized and esteemed. Perhaps that's because most traditional Chinese physicians are male, and dong quai, also called Chinese angelica, is commonly used for health complaints unique to women. A female Chinese physician might switch the rankings of the two.

At least nine species of angelica, part of the parsley family, exist. They possess different medicinal traits, but the sinensis variant is the most valued. Japanese angelica (A. acutiloba) is very similar to dong quai. European angelica (A. archangelica) is used primarily for infections. American angelica (A. atropurpurea) is used mostly for heartburn, flatulence, and colic, but it can be confused with some of the more poisonous species. Most of the research has been conducted on the Chinese and Japanese species. The name dong quai means "proper order," and for thousands of years the dried roots have been used to restore a healthy order to the body.

Dong quai herb has a reputation as a very valuable remedy for women as it contains compounds which can regulate female hormone action. Dong quai also lowers blood pressure, increases blood flow to the brain and other parts of the body, and has also been shown to have mildtranquillising and painrelieving effects.
