What Coffee Is:

Coffee is probably the most popular drug in the world. This densely leaved shrub with its aromatic white flowers and reddish brown berries originally came from what is now Ethiopia, and by the fifteenth century or so, it was cultivated in various parts of the Middle East. The reputation of the invigorating brew spread from there, and a couple of hundred years later, drinking coffee was in vogue in Europe. For a long time, Arab lands controlled the plant and its seeds, with most of the world's coffee supply being shipped through the port of Mocha. In the late 1600s, Dutch traders smuggled some seeds out of the area and cultivated them on the Indonesian island of Java, giving rise to another name for the brew. From there, the plant was introduced to Central America, Brazil, Jamaica, and elsewhere.
