Alfalfa side effects

In small, reasonable amounts, alfalfa causes no known side effects or problems. If you eat upwards of 120 grams of seeds a day, you might notice some abdominal discomfort, flatulence, and diarrhea.

Because of a toxic amino acid called canavanine, long-term consumption of high dosages of alfalfa seeds or sprouts could trigger a recurrence of systemic lupus erythematosus in people previously treated for the condition. If you have lupus or are in remission, you shouldn't consume alfalfa seeds.
