Alfalfa plant

The dried leaves of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) have been used for centuries to treat various disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, including loss of appetite and indigestion, among other conditions.

Alfalfa leaves contain saponins, which appear to prevent absorption of cholesterol. Other substances in the leaves include chlorophyll, flavones, isoflavones, sterols, protein, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Overall, alfalfa leaves are thought to cleanse the body by acting as a laxative and diuretic and by stimulating the appetite.
