•   Licorice or DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice), an extract of the licorice herb, helps heal ulcers. A three-month study of duodenal ulcer sufferers found that DGL healed ulcers faster than the popular drug Tagamet. Commercially prepared DGL products are available; follow package directions.

•   Psyllium provides supplemental fiber. Take as needed. Begin with 1/2 teaspoon psyllium seeds or powder mixed in 8 ounces of cool liquid and drink 2 to 3

cups daily. Stir the mixture vigorously and drink it quickly, followed by additional water. Do not take psyllium if you are taking supplemental fiber.

•   Zinc promotes healing of the digestive tract. Take 20 to 30 milligrams daily.

•   Fiber is associated with a reduced rate of duodenal ulcer; it also cuts recurrence rates of the illness. Fiber promotes the secretion of mucus, which helps protect the digestive tract. Commercial products are available; follow package directions.
