Heartburn and indigestion

Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest behind the breastbone that sometimes happens after eating. The condition—which may last for several minutes to several hours—occurs when the muscular opening from the esophagus into the stomach doesn't work properly, allowing hydrochloric acid to wash back up into the throat.

The hydrochloric acid, which is used by the stomach during digestion, is produced in abundance when you consume spicy, fried, or fatty foods, as well as coffee, citrus fruits, chocolate, tomatoes or tomato-based foods, and alcohol.

Heartburn may also be the result of ulcers, gallbladder problems, allergies, stress, hiatial hernia, or an enzyme deficiency.
