Diverticulitis disease

What is Diverticulitis disease?

Diverticulitis disease is a condition where the mucous membranes lining the colon become inflamed. The result is small, pouchlike areas called diverticula in the large intestine. Once formed, these never go away, and although they cause no symptoms themselves, they can become inflamed and infected if waste matter gets trapped in them.

Diverticula typically form when a person becomes constipated, and the condition can be acute or chronic. Symptoms include cramping, bloating, tenderness on the left side of the abdomen, constipation or diarrhea, nausea, and an almost constant need to eliminate.

You may see blood in the stool. Although millions of Americans are affected with Diverticulitis disease, many don't know it because they've come to consider their symptoms as simple indigestion.
